Model-Based Design Coaches Program

2023

My team delivered a model-based design training program for VHB'ers that was recognized at the Year in Infrastructure Conference in 2023. The program equips civil engineers with the skills to design, review, and deliver infrastructure through connected CADD data, automating many manual workflows in plans production and quantity calculations, and focusing staff on design intent.

I developed AI agents for learning Bentley software and consulted with dozens of engineering firms on integrating AI into their daily workflows; reinforcing learning and improving troubleshooting. Actively helping product teams at Bentley Systems shape the integration of AI design applications, while advocating in industry for the adoption of AI to accelerate infrastructure design work.

2010 – Prior

I have loved civil engineering for nearly as long as I can remember. Prior to VHB, I worked in public and private sector engineering roles, on state highway projects and municipal infrastructure projects for nearly 20 years. My values are based in curiosity, the strive to meaningfully contribute, and the wonder of technology.

2009
Orchard Street Interchange in Boise, ID
Engineering Intern: Construction Inspection & Administration
My 1st major infrastructure experience, where I performed minor inspections and observed construction. I learned a lot about the construction process and the resources it takes to get things built. Credit to McAlvain Construction and the Idaho Transportation Department.
2011
FEMA Flood Repair, County Roads in Kooskia, ID
Engineer in Training: Owner's Representative
Designed and built on an accelerated schedule, this project taught me a lot about working with local resources, and creating a positive feedback loop between the engineer, contractor, and owner.
2012 – 2015
Sewer Extension Review in Boise, ID
Engineer in Training: Issued approved drawings for construction of public sewer extensions
Here I learned so much about how cities develop and grow their infrastructure. I recommend all young engineers work for their local city or town in some capacity.
2016
Public Works Tenant Improvement in Boise, ID
Civil Engineer: Managed relocation of the Public Works call center
Notable because the focus on people, physical space, and use of technology drove the project from new perspectives. It required me to think about how people will use what we build, and involve them in the process. The result was a space they loved, and a superior experience for customers.
2017
Irrigation Improvements at Twenty Mile South Farm in Boise, ID
Civil Engineer: Managed assets and improvements to the city's networked deep well irrigation system
This taught me a lot about the intersection of system design, hardware, and operation. TMSF is also a great example of infrastructure innovation from a city, providing a self sustaining public good.
2019
Kirkman Road Extension in Orlando, FL
Civil Engineer: Primary roadway engineer on the extension of SR 435 and reconfiguration of the 435/482 interchange
Working closely with a large team requires excellent communication, task coordination, and an iterative feedback loop. This was a seminal project in my career that required me to channel nearly everything I had learned to date, and test it under pressure. Nothing will help you grow faster than working on a really challenging engineering problem with urgency.
